Nuclear Power produces electricity much like a steam engine. The Uranium Fuel rods heat water. The steam produced by the heated water drives turbines which turn generators producing electricity. Albert Einstein has been quoted as saying, "Nuclear power is one hell of a way to boil water". So keep in mind that with the exception of a handful of energy production methods, such as the Bloom Box or Molecular Carbon method, the production of hot water is the objective. We will look at this later.
DISASTERS are usually caused not by one event, but by a series of unfortunate and usually avoidable events. Chernobyl was such a case. The Soviet Union needed a cheap source of energy to provide electricity and the answer was Nuclear Power, which was used to supply the 2,000,000 persons living in Kiev, 104 kilometers away from the state run Chernobyl Power Plant. In addition to supplying energy, this Power Plant was a symbol of Soviet Industrial and Technological Muscle and was proudly considered the cream of the crop of the Soviet Nuclear Power Plants.
When everything works well the benefits of Nuclear Power are enormous. One kilogram of URANIUM produces the same amount of energy as 3,000,000 kilograms of coal, which is a non renewable resource which pollutes the environment.
